Are alpha males healthy? This question has received some attention. But the outcomes are not generally accepted or reflected in the dialogue of popular culture. Even after reviewing a study that establishes the desirability of beta status, the idea of the alpha male is still presented as a shining status to be much desired and hard fought to attain. I think it is a cultural archetype that represents the most of European ethos. Descriptions of the ongoing debate and the terms in which it is debated are reflected in a recent article in the Wall Street Journal (Tues., Sept. 11, 2013)
It reminds me of the study where the alpha chimps always received first dibs on food. The troop found diseased carrion and as usual gave the Alphas first dibs. They ate the diseased meat and died. Betas then assumed leadership of the troop. As new chimps joined the group they adopted the Beta approach.
The impact of testosterone production on the human animal is one point of differentiation between male and female. In some ways all males are Alpha or aspire to be.
